Extractions
Dr. Tris J. Carta does everything possible to preserve your natural teeth and avoid extractions in Manchester, CT. However, saving a tooth is not always possible or desirable, especially when it has no space to grow in, as with wisdom teeth or when starting orthodontic treatment. In the latter case, sacrificing one or more natural teeth gives the remaining teeth room to shift. Other common reasons for tooth extraction include infections, deep cracks, and advanced gum disease.
What to Expect When You Need a Tooth Extracted
Before scheduling you for the extraction appointment, Dr. Carta takes several X-rays while visually inspecting your teeth and gums. Dr. Carta will discuss all practical options for replacing the tooth or teeth he is about to extract, including dental implants, dentures, or bridges. In the latter case, the teeth surrounding the missing tooth must be strong enough to support the new restorations.
Your comfort is always our top priority. Dr. Carta or one of our dental assistants numbs your lips, cheeks, and gums on the day of your extraction appointment to prevent you from feeling discomfort. After ensuring that the medication has taken effect, Dr. Carta uses an instrument called a dental elevator to loosen your tooth from its socket and remove it. You will feel several back-and-forth tugging motions, but these should not be uncomfortable for you.
Once the tooth is out, we will ask you to bite down on a gauze pad to control the bleeding until it stops on its own. We will send you home with several clean gauze pads that you should change when they become soaked with blood. Please avoid drinking with straws over the next several days since the suctioning motions could loosen the blood clot that formed on your gum line. You also need to consume a soft foods diet to give your mouth a chance to heal.
